COPING WITH FAMILY STRESS IN A HEALTHY WAY

We will still experience pressure during the pandemic, which is not over yet. Work and finances are sources of stress that most affect family life. This means that parents must be smart in managing their stress so that family life remains healthy.

A survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2010 found that 73% of parents are a source of stress in the family. The survey also found that two-thirds of parents said their stress had no impact on their children. In fact, it turns out that only 14% of teenagers stated that their parents' stress had no impact on them.

The APA research also found that the relationship between high stress and health is worrying: 34% of obese parents have stress levels ranging from 8-10 points on the stress scale, compared to 23% of normal-weight parents.

Subsequent surveys found that stressful parental behavior can affect the health of the entire family. Parents who are stressed and obese tend to have obese children as well. On the other hand, the survey found that obese children were often found in stressed families. Give children the opportunity to imitate good things .

Children imitate their parents, of course we all know because that's how children learn. Right, mother? This is how children think: What parents do, must be good and should be imitated. This also includes ways to deal with stress. When parents deal with stress in an unhealthy way, children will imitate. These are tips from APA to manage stress in a healthy way:

1. Check your lifestyle again . As parents, we are models of healthy behavior for children. If we deal with stress by overeating, children will do it too. You should determine the healthy stress management methods that you will use. Will you deal with stress by jogging, swimming, yoga  or dance. Try to improve your skills to deal with stress. 2. Talk

. If your child seems anxious, ask him what is causing him to worry. Toddlers are not yet good at translating their feelings into sentences. But the look on his face conveys anxiety, which is derived from your attitude and behavior in responding to situations. If you're worried and overreacting to omicron, your child can sense it. Toddlers deal with stress in their own way. If he starts tugging at your hair, you have to be sensitive .
The lack of communication between parents and children will result in children who cannot make good decisions. Talking to children and introducing them to openness and decision-making is as good as eating healthy, getting enough rest and exercise.

3. Create a healthy environment. Our home, work space and social environment can influence our behavior. Changing the environment around us can help deal with stress. Organizing the messy part of the house, cleaning the rooms, is something you can control. When you do that, your child learns that when he is stressed he will focus on the things he can control.

4. Focus on yourself. There is a high correlation between choosing healthy or unhealthy behaviors and stress. When you are stressed, try to focus on yourself to deal with it. Eat nutritious food, rest and exercise. If you are confused, you will enter into a cycle of eating fast food – lazy (lazy movement) and lack of sleep.

This pattern will be transmitted to the child or imitated by the child, and children who are sleep deprived are more likely to have behavioral problems. Parents also influence children in terms of food choices. A healthy dinner is then followed by a leisurely walk or light physical activity, then closed with a night's sleep.

5. Change one habit at a time. Don't be ambitious or wholesale all at once. If you are interested in changing a healthier diet, apply this first, don't go directly to regular exercise with your family and have time to gather. After all, you – mom and dad – have done a lot of things outside of your job of making a living. Changing a lot of things will confuse you because there are so many things you have to adjust. Change one first, and when the whole family is comfortable, add more what you want to change. Make sure it's mutually agreed.
